Heavy snow hits wide areas of Japan

Heavy snow has fallen in wide areas of Japan, including Tokyo and surrounding areas.

According to weather officials, as of 8 PM local time 49 centimeters of snow had fallen in Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture; 39 centimeters in Kofu; 22 centimeters in Fukushima City and 25 centimeters in central Tokyo.
Strong winds also buffeted areas along the Pacific coast.
Shortly after 7 PM, Haneda Airport recorded maximum winds of about 75 kilometers per hour.

The snowfall will likely get heavier and continue through tomorrow along the Pacific coast, in Tokyo and surrounding areas as well as the Tohoku region in the northeast.
Three people died in 2 snow-related traffic accidents in Ishikawa and Nagano prefectures. Nearly 500 people have been injured. A 71-year-old man is in a coma after he fell on a slippery slope and was trapped under a snow plow.

Tokyo Electric Power Company says the snow caused blackout in parts of Tokyo and 6 prefectures, affecting more than 40,000 households. The snow also paralyzed transport services. About 760 flights from Tokyo's Haneda Airport have been cancelled. Shinkansen bullet trains slowed down on some lines and expressways in the Tokyo Metropolitan area are impassable in places.

Weather officials are warning of more heavy snow, strong winds and high waves. They are advising people to watch out for icy roads and disruptions to transportation services, and refrain from going outdoors if at all possible.

Snowstorm hits Japan
Heavy snowfall has blanketed wide areas of Japan, including Tokyo and surrounding regions.
According to weather officials, as of 6 AM local time, 27 centimeters of snow had fallen in central Tokyo, for the first time in 45 years.
44 centimeters fell in Fukushima City along with 33 centimeters in Sendai and Chiba City.

Strong winds also buffeted areas along the Pacific coast.
At 4:30 AM, Haneda Airport recorded a maximum wind speed of about 80 kilometers per hour.
Snow has almost stopped falling in Tokyo and surrounding areas. But along the Pacific coast in the northeastern region, it will likely to continue until Sunday night.

In Ishikawa and Nagano prefectures, 3 snow-related traffic accidents claimed the lives of 4 motorists. More than 600 people have been injured in the winter storm.

Tokyo Electric Power Company says that as of 6 AM more than 20,000 households in Ibaraki and Chiba prefecture are still without power. The heavy snowfall and strong wind are believed to have caused the blackout.
The stormy weather is also paralyzing transportation services. On Sunday, nearly 200 domestic flights were cancelled.
International flights are also being affected and around 6,000 travelers had to spend the night in Narita Airport.

Shinkansen bullet trains are being forced to slow down on certain lines and some expressway sections in the Tokyo Metropolitan area remain closed to traffic.
Weather officials are warning of more snow, strong wind and high waves. They are advising people to watch out for icy roads and disruptions to transportation services.

The strong tropical storm Man-yi is heading for Japan's main island.
It was in waters south of Japan on Sunday morning, moving north by northwest at about 30 kilometers per hour.
The Japan Meteorological Agency says the wind near its center reached 90 kilometers per hour. Maximum wind gust speed is 126 kilometers per hour.
The tropical storm has an atmospheric pressure of 980 hectopascals at its center.

It is expected to approach the Pacific coast of western to eastern Japan. It may make landfall on Monday during daytime somewhere in central to eastern Japan.
Weather officials are warning of very heavy rain of more than 50 millimeters per hour accompanied by thunder on Sunday and Monday in some areas.
200 to 300 millimeters of rain may fall during the 24 hours till Monday morning in some areas along the Pacific coast.
Man-yi is also expected to hit the Pacific coast of western and eastern Japan with strong wind overnight.

Powerful typhoon Man-yi tears through Japan

Typhoon Man-yi has moved to northeastern Japan after making landfall on the Pacific coast in the central part of the country.
The Meteorological Agency says the typhoon struck Aichi Prefecture on Monday morning, before moving towards the regions of Tokai, Kanto-Koshin and southern Tohoku.
As of 4 PM, Man-yi was located off Iwate prefecture in northeastern Japan. It was advancing on a northeasterly course at a speed of 65 kilometer per hour.
The storm's central atmospheric pressure was 985 hectopascals. It was still packing winds of up to 126 kilometers per hour.
Western and central Japan have so far recorded more than 550 millimeters of rain. Record downpours in Shiga, Kyoto and Fukui Prefectures prompted weather officials to issue special warnings early on Monday morning.
Such warnings are limited to natural disasters of a magnitude observed only once every few decades. They were downgraded before noon.
Typhoon Man-yi is expected to become a tropical depression by Sunday night.
Downpours of up to 80 millimeters an hour could occur sporadically between eastern and northern Japan until the end of the day. Waves will also remain high along the Pacific coast.

Cleanup starts in the wake of Man-yi
People in Japan are cleaning up after severe tropical storm Man-yi dumped heavy rain and caused destruction from flooding and landslides. Three people have been killed and six are missing.
Weather authorities issued special rain warnings for the western prefectures of Shiga, Kyoto and Fukui early Monday morning as the risk of disaster rose.
Man-yi made landfall later in the morning in central Japan.
Many parts of Kyoto Prefecture received more than 300 millimeters of rainfall, causing rivers to overflow.
In Fukuchiyama City, water from a branch of the Yura River inundated 5 districts, prompting authorities to advise all residents to evacuate at one point.
Food was delivered by boat to stranded citizens. Officials plan to assess damage and begin recovery work on Tuesday.
The storm didn't spare Kyoto's popular tourist spots from damage.
Arashiyama is home to Tenryuji, a Buddhist temple listed as a World Heritage site. The nearby Katsura River burst its banks, sending water into inns and souvenir shops.
A manager of a Japanese-style restaurant said he had to cancel all reservations for the week, but hopes to resume business as soon as possible.
Tourists expressed shock and alarm. One said the river turned black as its water churned and surged.

Heavy rainstorms hitting many parts of Japan - NHK world news
Heavy rainfall is lashing a wide area from western to northeastern Japan.
Weather officials say warm, damp air is moving into a rain front over Japan's main island, while a cold air mass is hovering over the country. They say this has destabilized the atmospheric conditions.
94 millimeters of rain was recorded in Tamba, Hyogo Prefecture, during the 1-hour period until around 8 AM on Monday.

Radar images show up to 110 millimeters of rain per hour fell in Kagoshima Prefecture at around the same time.
Accumulated rainfall since Thursday has topped 400 millimeters in parts of southern Kyushu.
The downpours forced Japan Railways to suspend service on the Kyushu Shinkansen bullet train line in Kagoshima. But the service resumed less than one hour later.
Officials in Hyogo say a house was flooded after a nearby slope collapsed and mud poured into a waterway, causing it to overflow. They say an elderly woman who lived in the house alone was rescued.
As the risk of floods and mudslides has risen, some municipalities in Kagoshima, Hyogo and Ishikawa prefectures have issued evacuation advisories to local residents.

Low storm cloud caused tornado - NHK news Sep. 2, 2013
A meteorologist says a tornado that hit parts of eastern Japan on Monday was produced by a supercell -- a thunderstorm containing rotating updrafts of air -- that formed much closer to the ground than usual.
Japan's National Defense Academy Professor Fumiaki Kobayashi said he studied footage of the tornado captured in the Saitama and Chiba prefectures.
The professor said the cloud developed as low as 500 meters from the ground. Such clouds usually form at twice that height.
He said a funnel-shaped airstream appeared under the cloud and grew to at least 100 meters wide. Kobayashi said the cloud was so large that it maintained power even when the storm lost energy due to rainfall.
He said people in the tornado-hit areas must have thought they could touch the dark cloud. He urged people to be cautious of supercell clouds as they can be a sign that a tornado is coming.

Storm crossing southwestern Japan - NKH world news Sep. 4, 2013
A powerful storm is moving through southwestern Japan, bringing heavy rain and strong winds. Weather officials say affected areas should remain alert for mudslides, overflowing rivers and floods.
Japan's Meteorological Agency says Severe Tropical Storm Toraji made landfall in Kagoshima Prefecture early on Wednesday.
The Agency says Toraji was moving northeast at around 30 kilometers per hour near Miyazaki Prefecture as of 8 AM.
The storm's atmospheric pressure is 998 hectopascals at its center. Gusts of more than 54 kilometers per hour are blowing within a radius of 220 kilometers.
Winds of over 100 kilometers per hour were observed at around the time the storm hit land.
Rain clouds and moist air are causing downpours over a wide area of western Japan. More than 80 millimeters per hour of rain was observed on the island of Shikoku.
Kagoshima Prefecture was drenched with over than 250 millimeters of rain between Tuesday and Wednesday, which is above average for the whole month of September.
The storm is categorized as the 17th typhoon of the season in Japan.

At 12:00 the rainfall forecast for the afternoon was upgraded from 6 to about 18 !

At 13:00 the rain stopped and a few minutes of sunshine !
Now a strong wind is blowing, but the main rainclouds have moved further east of us.

There has been another tatsumaki tornado in Yaita and Kanuma - details later.

- - - Tornado rips through Tochigi Prefecture - NHK world news
A tornado has ripped through Tochigi Prefecture, north of Tokyo, damaging more than 110 buildings and leaving at least 3 people injured.
In Yaita city and neighboring Shioya town, a tornado ripped off roofs and shattered windows shortly after 1:00 PM on Wednesday. Local fire officials say a total of 50 buildings were damaged.
In Kanuma city, gusts of wind at around 12:20 PM caused similar damage to 66 houses and factories.
Three men in their 50s to their 70s suffered minor cuts and bruises.
Wind storms are believed to have been formed in 3 locations, as the 3 municipalities are 8 to 30 kilometers apart.

More twisters touch down in Kanto
Unstable atmospheric conditions extending across the country, including from the first typhoon to directly hit Kyushu in six years, spawned destructive tornados in the Kanto region Wednesday, two days after a twister wreaked havoc in Saitama, Chiba and Ibaraki prefectures.
Typhoon Toraji made landfall in Kyushu early Wednesday, prompting storm warnings, but the Meteorological Agency said the season’s 17th typhoon had weakened to an extratropical cyclone near Shikoku at around 9 a.m. and was moving northeast at around 30 kph. A swollen river in Gifu Prefecture, however, may have swept a girl away, and police are searching for her.
The cities of Kanuma and Yaita in central Tochigi Prefecture were believed to have been hit by twisters that tore off roofs and shattered windows in the afternoon, police said.
Two men were injured in Kanuma, where an apparent tornado tore the roofs off several houses and factories. Nearby Shioya suffered similar damage at around 1 p.m., local officials and police said.
In Yaita, windows were broken at a hospital and a school, and falling trees damaged about a dozen cars parked at a hospital. Calls poured in to City Hall from residents reporting that they had seen a tornado, officials said.
East Japan Railway Co. temporarily halted trains between the prefectural capital of Utsunomiya and the resort town of Nikko due to a power outage caused by lightning near Kanuma.
The highly unstable atmospheric conditions in Tochigi and the rest of the northern Kanto region were caused by warm, humid air sweeping under a stationary cold front over Honshu.
The regional weather observatory in Utsunomiya put out a tornado warning for Tochigi Prefecture at 12:47 p.m.
The city of Ise, Mie Prefecture, may also have been hit by at least one tornado Wednesday afternoon. Some 30 houses sustained roof and window damage.
On Monday, a tornado ripped its way from Koshigaya, Saitama Prefecture, to Noda, Chiba Prefecture, leaving more than 60 people injured and hundreds of houses damaged.
In regard to the weakening typhoon, the Meteorological Agency issued warnings for landslides and flooding as southern Kyushu was forecast to receive 300 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours to 6 a.m. Thursday, including periodic torrents of 80 mm per hour in some districts.

Heavy rain also hit Gifu and Aichi prefectures Wednesday afternoon, with more than 20,000 people in the Gifu cities of Ogaki and Kaizu and residents of Kita Ward, Nagoya, ordered to evacuate.
In Seki, Gifu Prefecture, police were looking for a missing junior high school girl after a witness Wednesday evening reported seeing a female being carried away by the Fujiya River, which runs through the city. No further details regarding the missing girl were provided.
Ogaki recorded 108.5 mm of rain in an hour, while Nagoya measured 109.0 mm.
The downpours prompted the Central Japan Railway Co. (JR Tokai) to halt 41 shinkansen runs.
Northern Kyushu was forecast to get as much as 250 mm of rain through Thursday morning.
The weather agency predicted winds of up to 126 kph and waves of 6 meters in southern Kyushu and winds of up to 108 kph and waves of 5 meters in the northern part of the island. Waves of 5 meters were forecast in the Amami region in the East China Sea, south of Kyushu.
The stormy weather also halted bullet trains and shut down expressways in Kyushu, and strong winds caused blackouts in the city of Kagoshima.

- - - Torrential rain continues in central Japan - NHK world news
Heavy rain continues mainly in central Japan.
The Meteorological Agency says a low pressure system downgraded from Tropical Storm Toraji moved east off the southern coast of Japan's main island of Honshu earlier on Wednesday.
Damp air is moving into a rain front accompanying the low pressure system. This is destabilizing the atmospheric conditions over a wide area, from western to northern Japan.
In Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture, 109 millimeters of rain was observed for one hour, ending at 5 PM on Wednesday.
More than 100 millimeters per hour of rain is believed to have fallen in some areas in neighboring Gifu Prefecture.
The torrents of rain have rapidly swollen rivers in Aichi and Gifu and other prefectures of central Japan.

A 61-year-old man died when his home on the Sea of Japan coast collapsed in a mudslide as heavy rain hit many parts of the nation Thursday.

According to police, Masatoshi Adachi’s home in Nagaoka, Niigata Prefecture, was knocked down by mud sliding off the mountain behind his residence as 104.5 mm of rain fell in a 24-hour period, a record for the area in August. Responding to a neighbor’s call for assistance, police pulled Adachi from the mud but he was later pronounced dead at a hospital.

In Tottori Prefecture, the rain-swollen Shiomi River flooded houses above the floorboards and some roads. The river rose 2.04 meters, exceeding the danger level at 6:40 a.m., prefectural officials said.

all at once
the great heat has come -
a ra ra ra ra

The rainy season finished much earlier than usual and suddenly it is hot hot hot -
more than 37 around Tokyo, and today, July 9, even 39 degrees centigrade in Yamanashi!

Heatstroke rises, as Japan sizzles
Temperatures are rising in Japan.
More than 2,500 people were treated for heatstroke in the first week of July-- about 3.6 times the previous 7 days. 3 people have died.
The mercury has soared above 35 degrees Celsius in many areas since the start of July.
The Fire and Disaster Management Agency says that among 2,594 heatstroke patients, 58 will be hospitalized for 3 weeks or more.

The 3 fatalities include a 50-year-old man in Ehime Prefecture, western Japan, who fell sick while doing some outdoor cleaning.
Aichi Prefecture in central Japan had the largest number of patients at 249, followed by Tokyo and its neighbor, Saitama.

Heatstroke sufferers have topped 7,000 since the end of May. That's 2.4 times more than the same period last year. About half were aged 65 or older.
Hot, muggy weather is expected to continue. Officials are urging people to make sure they consume lots of fluids along with salt and use air conditioners when necessary, as heatstroke can occur indoors.

The Japan Meteorological Agency
forecast Thursday a strong storm may hit Japan this weekend
as a fast-growing low-pressure system passes through the Sea of Japan.

Now the forecast has come true!

Powerful storm dumps rain on much of nation

A powerful storm caused by a rapidly growing low-pressure system pummeled much of the nation Saturday, injuring at least two people, one of them critically, and wreaking havoc with transportation systems as it plowed northward.

... Western, eastern and northern regions could experience winds of up to 126 kph by Sunday, while waves as high as 6 to 8 meters are expected off some coastal areas, the agency warned.

On Saturday, 92 mm of rainfall per hour was observed in the city of Miyazaki — an all-time record. Meanwhile, hourly rainfall of 88.5 mm was recorded in Shingu, Wakayama Prefecture, and Saeki in Oita Prefecture was hit by 42.5 mm per hour.

The strongest winds were clocked in Anan, Tokushima Prefecture, at 123 kph.

... The agency reported that the low-pressure system is forecast to develop over the Sea of Japan and will reach an atmospheric pressure of 970 hectopascals at its center — equivalent to a typhoon — at around 9 a.m. Sunday.

As the system is expected to merge with another by Monday morning around Hokkaido, northern areas of the country and the Hokuriku region on the Sea of Japan coast and could still be affected by stormy winds on Monday, it added.

Cherry and plum blossoms together
In a rare occurrence, a cherry tree and a plum tree at a Shinto shrine in Japan's ancient capital of Kyoto are blossoming at the same time.

The weeping cherry tree and the weeping plum tree are in front of the main hall of Otoyo Shrine 大豊神社 . The shrine, which was built more than 1,100 years ago, is near a popular tourist site known as the "Philosopher's Path."
The plum tree, which is estimated to be 250 years old, is about 5 meters tall. The cherry tree stands almost 8 meters tall.

Every year, the plum tree is in full bloom around March 10th until the end of the month, while the cherry tree blossoms in early April.

Temperatures were unusually high in March, causing the cherry tree to begin to blossom late last week.
A shrine official says the cherry tree and the plum tree are blossoming together for the first time in 30 years. The blossoms are likely to remain until the end of this week.
