Rural Graves in the Morning Mist

August 15 2004

In rural Japan, most of the farm houses have their own small private graveyard with stone monuments for the ancestors. It is still quite common to visit these graves and make offerings four times a year, spring and autumn equinox, o-Bon in mid-august and during the New Year Holidays.

But this year in our area :

.................................... so many gravestones
.................................... without flowers

During the Japanese Bon festival for the ancestor spirits many graves in our mountain village are not visited any more by the relatives. They are overgrown with weeds and sometimes now beautiful wild white lilies stand beside them, as if their white bells would make up for the humans that do not come say prayers any more.

Venturing out after the typhoon Nr. 18 brought another noisy night, wading through broken branches up to get the newspaper, turning to the ancestral graves on the way for a greeting they where backlit by the early morning sun on this fresh cool morning.

Small pink flowers, about 20 cm high, with a straight stem and a pink foxtail sticking out from each top where standing there, straight and strong, shimmering and glimmering in the early morning sun, sticking out among the fallen branches of the huge cedar trees。

................................................. Thus is eternal encouragement.

The lonely farm houses here in the Japanese mountains all have their own private small graveyard for the ancestor,s graves. Nobody comes to care for them any more, even at O-Bon in August, the memorial of the ancestors, they are just like that on my daily walk to the newspaper:

weeds among graves

It is endemic to Japan, where it is known as Sugi (Japanese: 杉).
The tree is often called Japanese Cedar in English, though the tree is not related to the cedars (Cedrus).

Daruma made from Yakusugi, Cedar from Yakushima

source : yakusugido.com

. . . CLICK here for Yakusugi Photos !

Yakusugi (屋久杉)
is a Japanese cedar that grows on the mountain 500 metres above sea level. The term "Yakusugi" refers to trees that are more than 1,000 years old. Those less than 1,000 years are called "kosugi." (lit. small Japanese cedar)’. The Japanese cedars in Yakushima may also be referred to as "jisugi" (literally: "locally grown cedars")’, but this also encompasses the kosugi, and is a regional dialect.

In general, the Japanese cedar lives for about 500 years, but Yakusugi lives much longer. Yakusugi that grows on less nutritious granite grows slowly and is grained very tightly. It contains much resin due to Yakushima's high rainfall and high humidity, making it harder to rot. As a result, these trees tend to have longer lives, and many larger trees have been around for more than 2,000 years. Famous examples include the Jōmon-sugi, Kigen-sugi and Wilson stumps, named for their discoverer.

Stargazer Lilies

The stargazer has added a new layer to the already rich legacy of lilies, which have been a significant floral symbol for centuries. In ancient mythology and in folklore from around the world, the lily has appeared as a deeply spiritual and philosophical metaphor. Developed in the latter part of the 20th century, the stargazer lily is a recent addition to the lily family, but this unique and rather exotic hybrid has rapidly risen in popularity to become one of the most adored and sought-after of all lily varieties.

The lily family has traditionally represented innocence and purity. These motifs appeared as far back as ancient Greek and Roman civilizations and reappeared in biblical traditions. Stargazer lilies have come to be associated with these meanings, but they've taken on additional meanings as well. White stargazer lilies, in particular, have come to characterize a sense of purity and are often used as an expression of sympathy. The pink varieties are also considered symbolic of wealth and prosperity, as well being as a sign of aspiration.

a most famous On-Myoo-Ji

quote
In Chinese philosophy,
the concept of yin-yang (simplified Chinese: 阴阳; traditional Chinese: 陰陽; pinyin: yīnyáng), which is often called "yin and yang", is used to describe how seemingly opposite or contrary forces are interconnected and interdependent in the natural world; and, how they give rise to each other as they interrelate to one another. Many natural dualities (such as male and female, light and dark, high and low, hot and cold, water and fire, life and death, and so on) are thought of as physical manifestations of the yin-yang concept. The concept lies at the origins of many branches of classical Chinese science and philosophy, as well as being a primary guideline of traditional Chinese medicine, and a central principle of different forms of Chinese martial arts and exercise, such as baguazhang, taijiquan (t'ai chi), and qigong (Chi Kung) and of I Ching.

My two 'ways' are drawing and kung fu and I have always kept notes over many years of Wing Chun kung fu training.
I always draw the concepts my teachers pass on as well as my own ideas. I went to draw a Tao symbol in ink with a Japanese Aquash brush ( Pentel) and suddenly I saw that I was drawing Daruma San as well.
As founder of Shaolin Kung Fu it just seemed perfect and was certainly drawn in a 'no minded' state.
