It was in waters south of Japan on Sunday morning, moving north by northwest at about 30 kilometers per hour.

Powerful typhoon Man-yi tears through Japan

Typhoon Man-yi has moved to northeastern Japan after making landfall on the Pacific coast in the central part of the country.
The Meteorological Agency says the typhoon struck Aichi Prefecture on Monday morning, before moving towards the regions of Tokai, Kanto-Koshin and southern Tohoku.
As of 4 PM, Man-yi was located off Iwate prefecture in northeastern Japan. It was advancing on a northeasterly course at a speed of 65 kilometer per hour.
The storm's central atmospheric pressure was 985 hectopascals. It was still packing winds of up to 126 kilometers per hour.
Western and central Japan have so far recorded more than 550 millimeters of rain. Record downpours in Shiga, Kyoto and Fukui Prefectures prompted weather officials to issue special warnings early on Monday morning.
Such warnings are limited to natural disasters of a magnitude observed only once every few decades. They were downgraded before noon.
Typhoon Man-yi is expected to become a tropical depression by Sunday night.
Downpours of up to 80 millimeters an hour could occur sporadically between eastern and northern Japan until the end of the day. Waves will also remain high along the Pacific coast.

Cleanup starts in the wake of Man-yi
People in Japan are cleaning up after severe tropical storm Man-yi dumped heavy rain and caused destruction from flooding and landslides. Three people have been killed and six are missing.
Weather authorities issued special rain warnings for the western prefectures of Shiga, Kyoto and Fukui early Monday morning as the risk of disaster rose.
Man-yi made landfall later in the morning in central Japan.
Many parts of Kyoto Prefecture received more than 300 millimeters of rainfall, causing rivers to overflow.
In Fukuchiyama City, water from a branch of the Yura River inundated 5 districts, prompting authorities to advise all residents to evacuate at one point.
Food was delivered by boat to stranded citizens. Officials plan to assess damage and begin recovery work on Tuesday.
The storm didn't spare Kyoto's popular tourist spots from damage.
Arashiyama is home to Tenryuji, a Buddhist temple listed as a World Heritage site. The nearby Katsura River burst its banks, sending water into inns and souvenir shops.
A manager of a Japanese-style restaurant said he had to cancel all reservations for the week, but hopes to resume business as soon as possible.
Tourists expressed shock and alarm. One said the river turned black as its water churned and surged.
