First Sunrise 2005

The first sunrise of the New Year 2005

It is somehow a religious duty to watch the sun come up in Japan on January the first.

We like to at least see it on TV, all the famous spots with their mountain temples and finally Mt. Fuji in its first glory, usually an uplifting sight on the first of January.

This year was different. All of Japan covered in more snow over night, thick clouds everywhere。
Around seven thirty I left the house on my daily walk to the mailbox up the hill. Opening the door I looked at the gray sky, suddenly changing to raging clouds and shimmers of pink and purple。

As I struggled up the hill, frozen snow crackeling under my boots, the sun was struggeling her way through the clouds too, leaving bands of pastel colors in the sky and when I turned to greet her she was there to greet me, in all her splendor ! Energy and sparkles everywhere!

Back at the door the sky seemed to close its door too, and gray it was as before.

Gabi wishing you all the Best.

Hata san from Kurashiki was so kind to send me another Amida, a stone relief (magaibutsu) from Oita.
お日様なら大日如来も良いかもしれません。
大分の臼杵の石仏に行った時の大日如来坐像です。ご存じかもしれませんが、国宝に指定されています。
