The birds are not hawks, but Tonbi 鳶, black kite, Milan noir.
Father and Mother Tonbi live in our woods and we see the chicks start their first ride in the air every year. Since we live high up in the valley, we use to say:
tobi no senaka o mite kurasu
鳶の背中を観てくらす。。。
We live looking down at the back of the Milan. Of course more often they soar above us, not below us.
