Enshrined at Sarumaru-jinja is Sarumaru Dayu,
who composed the poem,
"Treading on autumn leaves
deep in the mountains,
when I hear the call of the deer,
autumn is sad."
Sarumaru Dayu, considered one of the 36 Great Poets, is an enigma. It is said that he spent his last years here. The deity is worshipped as a god who removes lumps from the body, and even today worshippers come to this shrine to pray for the healing of cancer and other diseases.
The festivals held on the 13th of each month also attract many worshippers.
saru no nenbutsu 猿の念仏

Meditation is not meant to help us run away from difficulties.
It is meant to allow positive healing to take place.

To meditate is to learn how to stop
being carried away by our regrets about the past,
our anger or despair in the present,
or our worries about the future.
People of this world are deluded. They're always longing for something
- always, in a word, seeking.
But the wise wake up. They choose reason over custom.
They fix their minds on the sublime and let their bodies change with the seasons.
All phenomena are empty. They contain nothing worth desiring.
Calamity forever alternates with Prosperity.
To dwell in the three realms is to dwell in a burning house.
To have a body is to suffer.
Does anyone with a body know peace?

Those who understand this detach themselves from all that exists
and stop imagining or seeking anything.
The sutras say, "To seek is to suffer. To seek nothing is bliss."
When you seek nothing, you're on the Path.

Scientists are finally realizing what the Elders have taught for thousands of years - everything is connected. Because everything is interconnected, whatever you do to any one thing, you do to everything. If you poison any part of the earth, the poison eventually affects everything else.
If you poison the plants, the birds will eat the plants, which poisons the birds. The birds are eaten by humans which poisons the humans. The humans will have babies who could be deformed because the plants were poisoned. We must learn to live in harmony with the earth. We must learn to think good things.

Every good thought is felt by everything, which causes everything to be happy.

The surface of life is also in a state of constant flux, with good days and bad, victory and defeat. To maintain, as the ocean does, a deep inner calm, while the storms of misfortune, reverses, fears and worries lash at the surface of life, is to discover the secret of serenity.

Years ago, when Thomas Edison's factory burned down, he wasted no time bemoaning his fate. Immediately after the disaster the reporters found a calm, quiet man already at work on plans for a new building.

When Emerson's home was destroyed by fire and his precious books were being reduced to ashes, Louisa May Alcott came to console him. The great philosopher said, "Yes, yes, Louisa, they are all gone, but let us enjoy the blaze now. Isn't it beautiful!"
Some people are ocean personalities. In their inner depths they are not defeated by what happens to them.

The towering waves of circumstances cannot reach us when we go deep within to seek the peace that passes all understanding. While the surface of life is in turmoil we can find an inner calmness to see us through.

Wilferd A. Peterson

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Today's Meditation:
Peace. May peace be with you.
What a wonderful part of life peace is, and how little of it we tend to see in the hustle and bustle of daily life. It's there, though--it's just not in the headlines, not on the newscasts, not on the game shows or reality programming. It's not in the advertising, because ads depend upon us losing our inner sense of calm in favor of a strong desire for a product or service. Thich Nhat Hanh says that "Peace is every step," and every major religion urges us to develop our peace, for only when we're at peace can we get everything there is to get out of life.

Why is this? I suppose it's clear when we think about the lack of peace--it's a sense of dissonance, a sense that something's wrong, even if we can't identify the problem. When we have that dissonance, though, it's difficult to go forward in other areas without taking care of that dissonance first. "I'll be happy or content as soon as. . . " or "I won't be happy until. . . " are the two most common ideas that dissonance creates in us, and even though when we're feeling good we can see the flaw in that logic, we're not always feeling good, are we?

Peace can come only when we see truly what really matters and what really is not significant in our lives. Losing a job is quite a blow, but it really does nothing to the person we are in our depths--unless we let it. If we lose a material possession, that's all we've done, and spending hours agonizing over the loss will only hurt us and make us waste our valuable present moments on agony.

Peace comes from inside of us, as Wilferd Peterson says. It's there in each of us, yet we often keep it locked away, rarely to be let loose into the light of day. Instead, we allow anxiety, worry, stress, jealousy, and all of the other parts of ourselves--everything from Pandora's box, if you will--out into our selves, and they determine how we feel. They rob us of our peace by blocking it off, keeping it down, and overwhelming us with their own needs. Anxiety needs us to worry if it's going to stay alive, so it keeps our minds filled with worrisome thoughts. Peace needs us to let go if it's to thrive, to let go of results and expectations, while all of the negative things want us to try to maintain control, an effort that is doomed to failure.

Emerson and Edison knew there was nothing they could do about their buildings. So they made use of the present moment as best as they could, and they didn't lose their peace. Let your peace to the surface, and try to create conditions in your mind in which peace can thrive. It can only benefit you, in both the short and long runs.
"Whenever the energy of anger comes up,
we often want to express it to punish the person whom we believe to be the source of our suffering.
This is the habit energy in us.
When we suffer, we always blame the other person for having made us suffer.
We do not realize that anger is, first of all, our business.

We are primarily responsible for our anger, but we believe very naively that if we can say something or do something to punish the other person, we will suffer less.
This kind of belief should be uprooted.
Because whatever you do or say in a state of anger will only cause more damage in the relationship.
Instead, we should try not to do anything or say anything when we are angry."
Northern Japan hit by unseasonal weather
A powerful low-pressure system has brought wintry weather to wide areas of northern Japan.
Weather officials forecast that snow will continue to fall from Friday through Saturday as the depression heads northeast along the Pacific coast. They are advising caution against heavy snow and blizzard conditions.

Within the past 24 hours, about 60 centimeters of snow has fallen in northern Tohoku.
Gusting winds up to 90 kilometers per hour were registered on the northern main island of Hokkaido.
The low-pressure system is likely to develop further when it reaches waters east of Hokkaido overnight.

It will bring heavy snow and strong winds to the area early Saturday morning.
The maximum wind velocity could reach 125 kilometers per hour while 40 centimeters of snow is forecast on the northern and eastern coasts.

Tohoku Electric Power Company says some 10,000 households in the northern prefectures of Miyagi and Iwate were without power as of 11 AM on Friday, due to the heavy snow.
Heavy snow hits wide areas of Japan

Heavy snow has fallen in wide areas of Japan, including Tokyo and surrounding areas.

According to weather officials, as of 8 PM local time 49 centimeters of snow had fallen in Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture; 39 centimeters in Kofu; 22 centimeters in Fukushima City and 25 centimeters in central Tokyo.
Strong winds also buffeted areas along the Pacific coast.
Shortly after 7 PM, Haneda Airport recorded maximum winds of about 75 kilometers per hour.

The snowfall will likely get heavier and continue through tomorrow along the Pacific coast, in Tokyo and surrounding areas as well as the Tohoku region in the northeast.
Three people died in 2 snow-related traffic accidents in Ishikawa and Nagano prefectures. Nearly 500 people have been injured. A 71-year-old man is in a coma after he fell on a slippery slope and was trapped under a snow plow.

Tokyo Electric Power Company says the snow caused blackout in parts of Tokyo and 6 prefectures, affecting more than 40,000 households. The snow also paralyzed transport services. About 760 flights from Tokyo's Haneda Airport have been cancelled. Shinkansen bullet trains slowed down on some lines and expressways in the Tokyo Metropolitan area are impassable in places.

Weather officials are warning of more heavy snow, strong winds and high waves. They are advising people to watch out for icy roads and disruptions to transportation services, and refrain from going outdoors if at all possible.
Snowstorm hits Japan
Heavy snowfall has blanketed wide areas of Japan, including Tokyo and surrounding regions.
According to weather officials, as of 6 AM local time, 27 centimeters of snow had fallen in central Tokyo, for the first time in 45 years.
44 centimeters fell in Fukushima City along with 33 centimeters in Sendai and Chiba City.

Strong winds also buffeted areas along the Pacific coast.
At 4:30 AM, Haneda Airport recorded a maximum wind speed of about 80 kilometers per hour.
Snow has almost stopped falling in Tokyo and surrounding areas. But along the Pacific coast in the northeastern region, it will likely to continue until Sunday night.

In Ishikawa and Nagano prefectures, 3 snow-related traffic accidents claimed the lives of 4 motorists. More than 600 people have been injured in the winter storm.

Tokyo Electric Power Company says that as of 6 AM more than 20,000 households in Ibaraki and Chiba prefecture are still without power. The heavy snowfall and strong wind are believed to have caused the blackout.
The stormy weather is also paralyzing transportation services. On Sunday, nearly 200 domestic flights were cancelled.
International flights are also being affected and around 6,000 travelers had to spend the night in Narita Airport.

Shinkansen bullet trains are being forced to slow down on certain lines and some expressway sections in the Tokyo Metropolitan area remain closed to traffic.
Weather officials are warning of more snow, strong wind and high waves. They are advising people to watch out for icy roads and disruptions to transportation services.
Spirituality & Practice

The truth that many people never understand, until it is too late, is that the more you try to avoid suffering the more you suffer
because smaller and more insignificant things begin to torture you in proportion to your fear of being hurt.

Thomas Merton

Strength is a capacity for endurance.
One of the dividends of suffering is the universal discovery the we possess a strength within us we never knew we had.
Navigating through a difficult episode not only shows us that inner strength is there but convinces us it will always be there to serve us in the future.
Overcoming gives us an assurance of personal confidence and value that far exceeds what we thought we possessed before our struggles began.

Dennis Wholey

Meditation is not meant to help us run away from difficulties.
It is meant to allow positive healing to take place.
To meditate is to learn
how to stop being carried away by our regrets about the past,
our anger or despair in the present,
or our worries about the future.

Thich Nhat Hanh

Dreams are renewable.
No matter what our age or condition,
there are still untapped possibilities within us
and new beauty waiting to be born.

Dale Turner

One who gains strength
by overcoming obstacles
possesses the only strength
which can overcome adversity.

Albert Schweitzer

.......................................................................

Today's Meditation:

I think that most of the trials and sufferings that we go through are intensified because of the fear we have that they'll never end. If I have a slight cold, it's easy for me to deal with it because it's not that intense and I know that it will pass soon. If I have the flu and I'm in intense pain, fear that the pain will continue kicks in, so I'm no longer suffering just from the sickness, but also from the fear that I have.

Ironically enough, my strength to overcome both the suffering and the fear is through acceptance. My situation is as it is, and unless I cause it to do so, it won't bring on any further suffering. There is a subtle, quiet strength in acceptance that helps people I know to get through almost anything that happens to them.

The strongest people I know are the ones that fight the least--they don't need to fight, for life and its foibles doesn't get them down. They maintain their balance and cheerfulness because they see in every trial a lesson; they see in every bit of pain something new to learn.
Once an affliction becomes a teacher, we don't need to fear it any longer, do we?

Suffering is a part of life, but the degree to which we suffer is pretty much up to us. We make of our situations what we make of them; the power to decide to make something positive of a seemingly negative occurrence is all ours.
What will we do with that power?

What psychosocial interventions work?

Those with chronic pain experience higher levels of depression, insomnia, anxiety, suicide somatoform disorders, substance abuse, and personality disorders.
Specifically in terms of anxiety, chronic pain patients experience higher levels of posttraumatic stress disorder and health anxiety (hypochondriasis).

Although most research so far has focused on co-morbid depression and insomnia, a more general theory for explaining the relationship between chronic pain and these disorders has not yet been developed, although a diathesis-stress model has been proposed, where underlying genetic predispositions/vulnerabilities to disorders are then ‘activated’ by the stress associated with the experience of chronic pain.

Be still and know. The Medicine Wheel teaches the four directions of inner power - not personal power, but the power of God.
These four directions are emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual.
As our emotions get too far out of control, we simultaneously create an equivalent mental picture, our physical body fills with stress and tension, and we become spiritually confused. When we experience these uptight feelings, the best thing to do is mentally pause, slow down our thinking, breathe slowly, or pray and ask the spirits to help.
Only when we approach the stillness of the mind do we get access to our spiritual guidance system.
To be guided, let your mind be still.
