Daisen 2005

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Mt. Daisen at Yonago, April 2005

Mt. Daisen, the Great Mountain, is the Fuji of Western Japan. Situated all by itself close to the Sea of Japan in a windy and snowy place.
We choose just the right day to visit this spring, driving up from the sea to the mighty hight of the Daisen Panorama Pass. We had visited the temple and shrine of Mt. Daisen 10 years ago, on our first trip to the area.

I wrote the following episode at that time, just 10 years from now:

When we were pregnant with the idea of buying an old farmhouse, a priest at Daisen Shrine told me to buy his Anzan Mamori, a talisman for easy birth.
“It is not only good for the birth of a child, but for anything new you start, a business or something. So try this one!”

And he was right: after just two months (very fast and seldom in this part of the traditional countryside) we bought our new home, Paradise Hermitage (GokuRakuAn) and have lived happily ever after with this new CHILD Venture!

This trip was a kind of "O-Rei Mairi", a visit as a thank you for a favour granted!

For the tourist:

Situated in the western part of Tottori, Mt. Daisen, chosen as one of the best one hundred mountains in Japan, is the generic term for a chain of mountains with Mt. Tsuru-ga-mine, 1,729 meters above sea level, as its highest peak. It belongs to Daisen-Oki National Park. It is the highest peak in the Chugoku region (the southwestern end of Japan's main island) and has historically been regarded and worshipped as a sacred mountain.

Severe cliffs stand out on the northern side of Mt. Daisen, but a view from the direction of Yonago reveals the elegance of a mountain also known as Hoki Fuji or Izumo Fuji.
Daisen-ji Temple on the mountain is an old temple established around the year 720 and Reiho-kaku Treasure Hall, Amida-do, O-gami-yama and Okumiya carry vestiges of holy ground. Towering cliffs on the eastern side of Daisen-ji Temple Hondo (the main inner temple) are called Kin-mon, the Golden Gate, and this is the best spot from which to see the north wall of Daisen.

The view from Kagikake-toge Pass is splendid (the last two pictures). You can enjoy a panoramic view of virgin beech and oak forests that change colors from spring green, dark summer green to glowing yellow in autumn. In the vicinity is a selection of facilities that make the most of Mt. Daisen's nature, such as a tourist blueberry farm, a dude farm where you can barbeque, field athletic facility, and a horseback riding center from which you can go for a long-distance ride into the open-air. You can ski in the winter, too.

Cats in Paradise

Our Cats in Paradise - O-Tsu and Haiku-kun

O-Tsu was given to us as a tiny baby in April 2003.
Bernd raised her lovingly and still is Mama-san for O-Tsu.

Usually we call the cats after the hero of the yearlong samurai drama on NHK. It was Musashi, and the cat's name should have been "Takezoo", but it turned out to be a girl, so we choose Musashi's lifelong love, O-Tsu (the Chinese character is different, ours is the character from the nearby town of Tsuyama 津山, just to complicate things a little. :o)

Haiku kun, our trilingual poetic tomcat

Happy in his round world

Well, he was borne on April 9, 2004, the day when Susumu Takiguchi, Chairman of the World Haiku Club visited my home, GokuRakuAn.

So the name of the baby was to be HAIKU.
(Today, he might be called KIGO kun ?!)

Anyway, thus started my interest in the World Haiku Club, when I started the World Kigo Database soon after Susumu left me back here with his god-son, baby Haiku kun.
worldkigodatabase

Now the baby has grown a lot and he is of course the honorable vice director of the World Kigo Database Project.

Haiku kun usually on my desk to help, like this
Cat and the Mouse ..

He likes to meditate in Japanese, like Daruma san

http://darumasan.blogspot.com/2005/12/haiku-and-daruma-san.html

His German is best when we talk about food, myami myami is his favorite word. You guess, it means feeding time is close...

He is fond of our English speaking visitors and purrs in English with them.
He can sound real English, brrr brrr instead of doing it with his Japanese accent bulu bulu bulu .

He usually ignores my commands in any language, if he is not up to it, showing his command of all these languages and his superiority in ignoring them.

Ah, yes, I forgot, he snores in Hungarian grrr grrr grrrrr , sort of...

If I need an inspiration for a haiku poem, I just call out loud * Haiku, Haiku * over my valley and hopes he comes along, with the inspiration ...
(my neighbours must think I am nuts...)

Haiku kun is quite famous around here. He gives interviews at the local radio station and even with the Japan Times. Ask Amy Chavez about him ...

Cherry Blossom Lake 大垪和の池の花見

The Cherry Blossoms were very dear to Saigyo, a priest-poet in the Heian Period.
Here I want to show you our lake and some poems of Saigyo.
Sato Norikiyo 佐藤義清

This world so dear
cannot be cherished enough
I leave my life to save it

Warrior Norikiyo Satoh left his worldly life on October 15, 1140.
His Buddhist name was Saigyo.

cherrylake00

I take a new path this year
to visit the cherry flowers
I have yet to see

Saigyo lays under the branches of a cherry blossom tree
and gazes at the flowers to his heart's content.

He watches the flower petals scattering in the air,
and recalls the days of his past.

cherrylake01

Travelling is life.

Life is travelling.

Chanting sutras to hide his loneliness, he came to the banks of the Tozu river and there, the cherry blossoms welcomed him with their branches streched out,
all in full bloom.

cherrylake02

Live with the cherry blossoms.
Die with the cherry blossoms.

When one hears the name Saigyo, cherry blossoms come to mind.
Indeed, Saigyo composed an unusual number of poems
about these spring flowers during the course of his life.

Especially when he sings of the falling flowers,
his mind seems to be taken into another world.

cherrylaketanjoji

Among the scattering petals, Saigyo saw a sacred world.
Unable to keep his mind from floating away with the petals,
he continued to sing of cherry blossoms until his death.

cherrylakebranch

If I may
I wish to die

under the cherry blossoms in spring
just around the full moon

in April

It was day 16 of the second lunar month of the year 1190.
Saigyo was 73 years old.
It is said that he died at the Hirokawa temple in Kawachi 河内 in central Japan (now Osaka).

SAIGYO, Saigyoo Hooshi (西行法師)

1118年(元永元年) - 1190年3月23日(文治6年2月16日))

Saigyo Memorial Day, Saigyoo Ki 西行忌 (さいぎょうき)
En-I Ki 円位忌(えんいき)

kigo for mid-spring
SAIJIKI for Memorial Days

Some sources place the exact day on February 15 or 16, others on March 23, according to the use of the Asian or the Western Calendar.

February 15 is also celebrated as the day when Buddha Shakyamuni entered Nirvana and is auspicious to die around this date.

...................................................

Saigyō Hōshi (西行 法師) Saigyo Hoshi
(1118 – March 23, 1190)

Born Satō Norikiyo (佐藤義清) in Kyoto to a noble family, he lived during the traumatic transition of power between the old court nobles and the new samurai warriors. After the start of the Age of Mappō (1052), Buddhism was considered to be in decline and no longer as effective a means of salvation. These cultural shifts during his lifetime led to a sense of melancholy in his poetry.

As a youth, he worked as a guard to retired Emperor Toba, but in 1140 at age 22, for reasons now unknown, he quit worldly life to become a monk, taking the religious name En'i (円位).
He later took the pen name, "Saigyō" meaning Western Journey, a reference to Amida Buddha and the Western paradise. He lived alone for long periods in his life in Saga, Mt. Koya, Mt. Yoshino, Ise, and many other places, but he is more known for the many long, poetic journeys to he took to Northern Honshū that would later inspire Basho in his Narrow Road to the Deep Interior.
He was a good friend of Fujiwara no Teika. Some main collections of Saigyō's work are in the Sankashū, Shin Kokin Wakashū, and Shika Wakashū. He died in Hirokawa Temple in Kawachi Province (present-day Osaka Prefecture) at age 72.

.......................................................................

Hanasaka Jiisan 花咲かじいさん

Once upon a time in a remote mountain village in Japan there lived an honest old man and his wife. The old man was out plowing his field one day when a little white puppy came fleeing toward him, crying. The puppy had been mistreated by the greedy old man who lived in the next field over. "Oh, you poor thing." exclaimed the old man, and taking him in, gave the puppy the name "Shiro." ("Shiro" in Japanese means white)

The old man and his wife loved Shiro very much. Shiro, in turn, became devoted to the old couple, and helped the old man with his work in the field every day. Shiro ate and ate, and quickly grew into a big dog.

One day, Shiro led the old man up a nearby mountain. When they reached the top, Shiro barked, "Arf Arf - Dig here! Arf Arf - Dig here!" As the old man began to dig, to his amazement, sparkling gold coins started pouring up from the ground.

"Let me borrow Shiro!" The greedy old man heard about this and, grabbing Shiro, forced him to take he and his wife to the mountain. "Where's the gold?" the old man demanded. Frightened, Shiro began to whimper. "Ah, so it's here," said the old man, and he began to dig. But instead of gold coins, garbage began pouring up from the ground. "How dare you!" exclaimed the old man. Furious, they killed Shiro.

When the honest old couple found out about this, they were overcome with grief. They decided to dig a grave for Shiro. Upon burying Shiro, a sapling sprouted from the ground above his grave. By the next day, it had grown into a towering tree.

"Shiro liked steamed rice cakes," recalled the old man. "Let's make some to take to his grave." He chopped down the tree that had sprung from Shiro's grave and made a mortar. Then he and his wife began to prepare the rice cakes. As the old man pounded the rice into the mortar, it began to turn into gold coins.

Upon seeing this, the greedy old couple rushed over. "Give us that mortar." Stealing the mortar, they returned to their house and began to make rice cakes. When they pounded rice, however, it turned into black mud right before their eyes. "What on earth?" cried the old man. Furious, he took an axe and chopped the mortar to pieces. Then he tossed the pieces of wood into the stove and burned them. The honest old man was disheartened. He gathered up the ashes from the mortar, put them in a box, and carried the box carefully back to his house.

"Let's sprinkle these ashes over the field and grow the radish that Shiro loved so much." When the old man sprinkled the ashes, a wind swirled up and blew the ashes into a dead tree. Amazingly, the dead tree began to bloom beautiful cherry blossoms. He then went and happily sprinkled ashes onto one dead tree after another, each which thereafter bloomed brilliant cherry flowers. News of the old man's miracle reached the town and before long, even the ears of the king, who promptly sent for the old man.

The old man was brought to the king, carrying his box of ashes. "Now I'll make the flowers bloom." He sprinkled the ashes onto the nearby trees, and immediately, beautiful white cherry flowers appeared.

"Splendid!" exclaimed the king, who was very pleased. "Well done. You are the greatest flower bloomer in all of Japan. You will be rewarded."

At that moment, the greedy old man came running, carrying the leftover ashes which he had gathered from the stove. "Wait! I'm the greatest flower bloomer in Japan." With that, he began to sprinkle his ashes. Instead of landing on the flowers, however, the ash flew into the eyes and nose of the king, choking him. "You impudent!" the king stormed, and promptly threw the greedy old man into prison.
